Coach Marla Beck

The REAL Reason You’re Not Productive

Time for some tough love, dear writer.

Because writing coaches like me hear an awful lot of reasons why your writing isn’t getting done.

And all of that suffering, exhaustion, frustration and disillusionment can be avoided, but to do so requires you to acknowledge a simple, profound truth.

Truth – If you want to be happy, you have to write.

Lots of people think it might be cool to try writing someday.

But they’re not obsessed by it.  Or driven by their dream.  Or marbled with the worst kind of envy when they see another writer shine.

If you know inside that you’re a writer, there’s no way around actually writing.

Over the years my clients have shared with me all the ways they thought they could make themselves happy without writing.

They pursued “success.”

  • “I know these assignments are killing my soul, but I get paid so well…”

They postponed happiness.

  • “I’ll write when I’m retired.  “It’s only 5 years or so…”

They discounted their need to write.

  • “I’ll just have another baby and focus on that for now…”

They denied themselves support, structure and accountability to help them achieve their writing dreams.

  • “I’ll think about hiring a writing coach after we remodel the kitchen…”

They gave their writing power away to their partners, children or friends.

  • “People will think I’m weird.”
  • “The PTA needs me…”

And the list goes on.

Dear writer, I know firsthand what it’s like to be driven by the need to write.  And I know firsthand how much energy it takes to ignore or tamp down your drive to express and develop your writing gifts.

There’s no way around it:  if you want to be happy, you have to write.

Nothing else works.

Why?

  • Because when you are actively writing, you’ve got a lot less energy to envy others.
  • When you stop hiding from the fact that YOU of all people have to use some of your time for writing, you begin to align your life more closely with your values.  Which brings you immense peace.  And  energy.
  • When you learn to transmute your desire to write into a productive writing practice, you start to see tangible progress…

– Your book gets drafted.
– Your novel gets revised.
– You learn your craft.
– You develop your talent.
– You produce.

Whether it feels like it to you or not, your drive to write is not a burden.

Your drive to write is a gift.

And the only way you’re going to start feeling alive, whole and vibrant again is to figure out how to engage with your writing — the writing that matters MOST to you — in a productive, satisfying way.

You can do this!
