A Writers’ Prayer for You

With all the challenges of writing, sometimes we overlook just how magical and amazing it is to be a writer.  But thankfulness and gratitude, as Faulkner reminds us, is essential:

“Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: it must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.”
― William Faulkner

Today, I’d like to share with you a simple tool you can use to refocus on and reflect on all that’s right and wonderful about your writing…just as it is, right now.

I’ve written a simple Writers’ Prayer, and it’s something you can adapt to fit your own beliefs.

Thank you for our hearts, which feel the stories before they’re formed.  Thank you that we cannot help but think about them, write them down and share them.

Thank you for our ears, which feast on the sounds of phonemes, syllables, words and well-made sentences.

Thank you for our eyes and the way they perceive the dance of life — alive in gesture, rhythm, tension and form, even in the smallest of exchanges.

Thank you for our fingers grasping pencils and tapping on keys.

Thank you for our voices.

Thank you for solitude, time and a little space to write.

Thank you for support in many forms:  our writing habits, our partners’ encouragement, our readers’ appreciation, our mentors’ guidance.

Thank you for this world, which offers us so much to respond to.

Thank you for gifting us with this compulsion that is so much a part of ourselves we have no choice but to sound these stories into words.

Thank you for the courage to submit our work and share what we write with others.

Thank you for abundant ways to grow our talent and our craft.

Thank you for the courage to write some of what truly matters…even when we can see no immediate professional or financial gain for doing so.

Thank you for the courage to say exactly what’s true in a way that’s exactly our own.

Thank you for the readers whose lives will be nourished by our efforts.

Thank you for our hearts, which feel these stories long before they’re formed.

Thank you for this compulsion.

Thank you for this passion.

Thank you for this gift.

Thank you for life.
